3D FRENZY - DOCTOR CHEWMANGER'S VAULT OF TERROR PRESENTS NIGHTMARE
Welcome once more to the Vault...
As we have seen, the 1950's saw the start of the first wave of eye popping 3D fright fests sweep through the cinema screens across the world. These movies became huge hits and left thier mark upon the pop culture of the time.
Never ones to hold back when it came to jumping onto the cultural bandwagon, the comics publishers of America decided that they too wanted a bite of the 3D pie.
But how to do it ? Did they print thier stories in red and green ink and give away free 3D glasses with every issue ? No...way too expensive.
ACG comics where the ones who came up with a solution. That solution was Truevision - full colour 3D where no glasses where required.
In reality all Truevision entailed was printing the artwork against a black background and having various arms, legs and other items emerge from the panel, giving the illusion of an image leaping from a cinema screen. It was a tacky little gimmick really but it worked and led to some interesting comic strips.
Presented here is the very first Truevision tale, originally printed in the January 1954 issue of Adventures Into The Unknown. I give you...Nightmare.
Join me tomorrow for the conclusion of our little venture into the third dimension. It's back to the cinema and back to the 80's, where we'll be spending a night in the most famous haunted house of all...
I assumed the ghoul was going for the editor anyway! LOL
