THE SUMMER OF SCI-FI 2023
So - what does Summer mean to you ?
Holidays abroad in hot, sweaty far away places ?
Barbeques in the back garden - eating greasy food whilst drinking crates full of supermarket beer thats on special offer ?
Driving to the coast on a Sunday afternoon, dodging the English summer rain by going into grotty little Amusement Arcades and trying to win that unlicensed Grogu toy on the claw grabber machine that always seems to let the toy go right at the last pico-second before it drops into the winning trough ?
Going shopping and seeing blokes walking around shirtless in the city centre - even though they're either as skinny as a nail or fat as pie and it's really, REALLY inadvisable for them to do so ?
Or is just the gnawing sense of horror that you've actually got to spend six whole weeks with your own offspring and they're going to be really bored and kicking up ten kinds of Hell after only three weeks ?
To me, Summer means something completely different...Aliens...lots and lots of Alien's !!!
There is a method to this apparent madness and the method is this - basically- as you can probably tell if you've read any of this blog so far - I watch a lot of films - all year round.
Those films fall into several categories - Exploitation, Sci-fi and Horror.
In the early part of the year I watch a mixture of ALL types of films from the above. As a huge Horror fan, I spend the entirety of the Autumn months watching Horror and nothing else - due entirely to those months being in close proximity to Halloween. To me, Halloween isn't just one day in October - it's the entirety of September, October and the first half of November (sometimes I even start my Halloween viewing over the last few days of August).
The remainder of the year I spend watching Christmas films - but NOT films like Miracle on 34th Street, I hasten to add - I spend my Christmases with killer Santas and snowmen and enjoying good old fashioned Christmas ghost stories.
So, with such a seasonally charged viewing schedule, that leaves the Summer months free to do something a little different.
I don't want to feel horrored out before September even starts, so what better way than to spend those long, hot Summer months than watching lots and lots of Sci-Fi films.
Which is precisely what I'm going to be doing here at Tales From The BackRoom. Over the next couple of months expect to see alien invaders, future dystopias, mutants, monsters, spaceships, UFO's and all kinds of unearthly phenomena. THEY ARE HERE !!!!
And after all that...it's Halloween.
